SSFAC came up with a big road win on Sunday as they defeated Deportivo Cometa by a score of 5-0. At this early point in the season, and facing the challenges of a new and competitive league, it is important to pick up some early wins and South City did just that as they were led by Aidan Durgerian & Kian Katanforoosh, who both found the net twice. Miguel Franco tallied the other goal for SSF.
The match saw a quick start from South City as Sully Donohue laid a ball back to Katanforoosh for a nice finish to the corner of the net in the 5th minute. It didn't take long for them to increase the lead as 8 minutes later Aidan Durgerian had his 1st of the match from a cross by Sam Nadell to the back post that Durgerian finished with a left footed shot hard and low to beat the keeper. Aidan struck again just 7 minutes later as he buried another left footed shot after a great cut back from Greg Hui who got the assist. South City closed out the 1st half with a goal from Miguel Franco after a corner kick from Donohue found the head of Bob Weger, who directed it to Franco for the strike. The boys were in complete control taking a 4-0 lead into halftime.
The final goal in half number two came form Katanforoosh as a clearance fell to him and he scored a beautiful volley to close out the scoring in minute 83. Strong bench play made a huge difference in this match as Anthony Long was solid at left back, Weger was in great form at both Center Mid and Center Back, and Kris Szeto contributed at Left Mid. Goalkeeper Adrian Monroy recorded his second win of the season and now has his first shutout, as he continues to be the leader for the defense.
Although starting the season with two nice wins is certainly a plus for the team and most importantly a confidence builder, they know there is much work ahead as the matches coming up will be even more difficult and require a strong effort. Next up is a big rival from the past as they travel to the South Bay to take on Santa Clara Sporting, Satruday night at Reed & Grant Sports Park in Santa Clara with kickoff set for 5:00pm.
