It was a match that justified the hype leading up to it. SSFAC & Santa Clara Sporting put it all on the line last Sunday with each team looking to get a win the the very competitive Pacific Premier League of the SWPL. Santa Clara struck first getting a goal in the 30th minute and held that lead at the half. Both clubs were bringing their best efforts....we saw solid defense, great passing, counter attacks, creative offense and good goalkeeping.
South City leveled the score in the 51 minute when a cut back run by Greg Hui saw him dropping a beautiful pass to Felipe Gonzalez who deposited it into the net. Now momentum had switched to SSF and they continued to put pressure on Sporting looking for the go ahead goal.
The lead came in the 70th minute as Miguel Franco delivered a great through ball to Jamie Nicholas, and he finished it for a 2-1 lead. The game continued to swing back and forth and SSF was taking control as they looked for the goal that would put the game to bed.
A push forward in the 90th minute led to Sporting picking up a loose ball from South City and they were off on a counter attack. A foul committed in the area led to a penalty kick for the visitors and they made good on it to close the match at 2-2. In the end, it was most likely a fair result as both clubs played some quality soccer on this day.
Next up for SSFAC is a visit to Redwood City on Sunday Night, Nov 5th when they take on JASA Reserves at Bechet Field with kickoff set for 7:00pm
