The 2024 Abronzino Cup opened with a bang for SSFAC as they had 9 different players record either a goal or an assist on their way to a dominant home win over Dublin Celtic FC by a count of 8-1. Greg Hui led the way with a 3 goal hat trick and an assist, and the defensive core of Fernando Costa, Djim Andemel, Bob Weger & Sam Nadell completely shutdown the Celtic offensive efforts. Goal keeper Adrian Monroy made sure any attempts that found their way on frame, were turned away as he notched yet another victory in the nets.

South City wasted little time in establishing the tempo of the match as they got on the board early when Neehar Mukne getting a start as the lone forward, won a ball that came off a defender and finished that opportunity into the far post for the 1-0 lead. The goals came quickly after that as Aidan Durgerian collected a cross sent in by Hui and his first time strike found the netting at the far post. Hui then collected his first tally of the day when he also won a ball off a Celtic defender and his finish to the far post side gave SSF a 3-0 lead at the 30 minute mark.

Bob Weger got onto the score sheet as he made a run to collect a corner kick from Omeed Miraftab-Salo and head it home at minute 40 to give South City a 4-0 halftime lead.

The second half saw the midfield play from Durgerian, Libardo Torres Salazar, Felipe Gonzalez, Miguel Franco & Brendan Cadam competely take control of the match and maintain possesion for SSF as they looked to put the game to bed. Just 10 minutes in to the second stanza, Mukne found Hui on the wing and Hui blew past his defender and hit a rocket low to the near post for his 2nd goal of the match. Hui wasn't finished yet for the day as Libardo Torres Salazar picked up his 1st of two assists on the day with a nice ball over the top of the defense to Hui who then chipped the goalkeeper first time to put an exclamation point on his hat trick.

In the 80th minute, SSF struck again as Miguel Franco touches a ball past the goal keeper and crosses it to Felipe Gonzalez who makes a deposit to the back of the net. Dublin not wanting to leave town being shutout, managed to pull one back as they hit the cord in the 85th minute, but South City countered that strike with one of their own as Torres Salazar played a ball to Connor Grant in the midfield. Grant beat his defender and then dribbled around the keeper to score into the open net.

A very feel good win for the team in the 1st game of the Group Stage of the Cup, but now the road to Round Two gets a little more difficult as next up for SSF is a trip to Bechet Field in Redwood City to meet ASC Silicon Valley, the Pacific Premier League Champions on Saturday Night January 13th. Match time is 8:00pm.

Im their 2 encounters this season, Silicon Valley swept the 2 game series. Game one saw them come from behind with 2 second half goals to win by 2-1, and the return match was an 8-3 romp over a shorthanded SSF side who just couldn't stay with the Champs. Now SSFAC will look to bring a strong effort to the match in hopes of keeping their Cup chances alive in the Group Stage. Will the 3rd time be the charm?....South City will be ready to bring their best and look for a positive result.
