It was the usual battle yesterday when SSFAC met Rovers SC. Up & down action, numerous chances and a very physical game. In the end, Rovers were awarded a penalty kick 3 minutes into stoppage time for a foul committed in the area, and that turned out to be the games final play resulting in a 2-2 tie. It was bittersweet for SSF as they had the game won despite missing 2 penalty kicks of their own. after a scoreless 1st half, Andrew Pantano got SSF on the board receiving a great through ball from Jim Burke, and tucked it away to the far side netting. An misplayed ball by the Rovers keeper led to SSF's second goal when Fabio Marques pounced on the loose ball and pushed it home for a 2-0 lead. Rovers quickly answered to cut the margin to 2-1 and the intensity would increase heading to the final whistle. With 3 minutes gone in stoppage time, a Rovers forward cut inside the penalty area were the ball was tackled away from him, but the referee called for the penalty kick and Rovers converted to earn the tie. Solid efforts came from midfielders Bobby Quinlan, Blair Smith, Leandro Monteiro, Rafa Arguello & the previously mention Jim Burke. The defensive core of Alvarez, Huy-Chan, Ellis & Ewbank held Rovers to just 4 shots in the second half. Abner Ramos was solid in goal and forward Omar Perez-Diaz created havoc for the Rovers defense making numerous dangerous runs which led to the first PK awarded to SSF when he was taken down on a breakaway. SSF closes out a very successful season when they meet Trabia FC in 2 weeks on Feb 27th.
