It is said that "speed kills", but after yesterdays match between SSFAC & Sunnyvale United, it may be noted that speed dominates. A masterful 1st half performance that had SSF control the pace of the game and dictate the style of play, led to a strong finish that brought South City a much deserved 2-0 victory over United. Relentless pressure applied by SSF in the first half completely wore down the Sunnyvale team, as the midfield play belonged entirely to Blair Smith, Bobby Quinlan, Leandro Monteiro, Fabio Marques, Andrew Pantano & Ryan Wiegmann. As Smith & Quinlan controlled the middle and distributed the ball, Marques, Monteiro, Pantano & Wiegmann made constant runs into the United area, creating numerous attempts at goal. Antony Reyes & Jonathan Wong put continuous pressur on the goalkeeper, but were unable to get the opening goal. As play was squeezed into the United end of the field, the SSF defense of Scott Ellis, Ian Preikschat, Harry Andreades, & Jim Burke completely closed off any thoughts of United coming forward to register an attack. Early in the 2nd half, Bobby Quinlan played a great ball up the wing to Jonathan Wong who beat his man and slotted a perfectly weighted pass to an oncoming Antony Reyes and he beat the keeper with a shot to the lower corner. Damian Hites & Omar Perez-Diaz continued the push to up the lead as they challenged for every 50-50 ball and worked their way into the Sunnyvale area. SSF doubled their lead when a thru ball played to Reyes sent him in alone on the keeper. As they came close together, Reyes chipped the ball over the keeper and in the ensuing collision went down to the turf with the keeper and an on rushing defender. The ball rolled towards the goal, struck the post and laided in front of the goal as the players scrambled to get there. As they came forward, the Sunnyvale keeper ran over Reyes leading to a foul, a red card issued to the keeper and a resulting penalty kick which was calmly coverted by Leandro Monteiro. That made the score 2-0 with just under 16 minutes left, to which SSF closed the game out with possession. Abner Ramos came up with a couple of big saves as Sunnyvale made a late try to get a goal. South City now prepares for a very good FC Palo Alto team for their next match on the road next week.
