Game Comments:

SSF knew going into the match that they would be shorthanded. Missing their leading scorer, and both starting outside defenders, it would be a challenge for South City against a fiesty Maritimo side. However that is just the challenge that this club embraces. SSFAC's talented roster allows for them to adjust to any situation and the players all know they can count on each other to give it their best. They came out of the gate hard yesterday and scored just 3 minutes into the match when Ryan Wiegmann slotted a ball to the left side netting after a feed from Omar Perez-Diaz. The team battled and adjusted to the line-up changes. Midfielders Howard Choy & Andrew Pantano dropped back to cover the outside back positions and did a fabulous job. Pantano was terrific clearing attacks and starting the transition game for SSF and also was a monster in the air constantly out jumping his opponent to win the ball. Choy shut down the opposite side of the field with his high pressure and ball handling skills. Scott Ellis and Ever Alvarez were a steady force in the middle of the SSF defense as they applied high pressure on the Maritimo forwards in an attempt to break down their play. Unfortunately, Maritimo struck for 2 quick goals to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. The South City midfield was starting to win the match ups in the center of the pitch. Strong play from Blair Smith, Bobby Quinlan, Leandro Monteiro & Fabio Marques was beginning to pay off as Omar Perez-Diaz, Jonathan Wong and Wiegmann were getting opportunites up front to try and bring SSF level. Early into the half after a foul, Blair Smith showed why he is deadly on set pieces. From about 30 yards out, Smith sent a perfectly placed ball into the upper right corner of the net for which the Maritimo keeper had no chance. That strike tied the match a 2-2 and gave SSF one of their most memorable goals of the season. The lead was shortlived however as Maritimo again struck for 2 quick goals to take a 4-2 lead. The 4th goal was a difficult one as a free kick from 35 yards out was sent high into the air towards the goal and dipped in just under the crossbar and barely out of the reach of keeper Abner Ramos who had to fight off a blinding sun to see the attempt. Ramos kept SSF in the match making numerous big saves, and coming out to challenge for balls sent through for on rushing attackers. SSF would get a goal closer when Fabio Marques collected a loose ball inside the area, settled the ball down to his foot and spun around to rip home a shot to the side netting. Marques, who celebrated his 45h birthday a day earlier, continued to push forward along with Monteiro & Perez-Diaz to get the equalizer. Numerous attempts in the closing minutes of the match came up short and included a save off the line by the Maritimo keeper to preserve the win for his team. It was a fine effort for the boys on this day as they again displayed their determination to play at a high level no matter the circumstances. The team will now regroup and prepare for the Grasshoppers in their final match before the PSL Winter Break.
