SSFAC put it all on the line in their match against Palo Alto SC, but unfortunately they came up a little short as 2 goals from PASC in the last five minutes of the 1st half and a set piece goal 17 minutes into the second half provided them a 3-1 win. South City struck for a goal 3 minutes from time as Damian Hites finished up a loose ball in front of the goal after a blistering shot from Omar Perez-Diaz. The loss, only the 2nd in their last 9 games, basically ended any hopes of SSF finishing on top in the division as PASC have 3 games in hand and only trail by 2 pts. in the standings. The match started off as a chess game, with both teams trying to find the others weakness. SSF's defense was solid with strong play from Ever Alvarez, Scott Ellis, Jim Burke, Ian Preikschat & Harry Andreadas as they turned away PASC's numerous runs into the area. Unfortunately, a little lapse in concentration lead to 2 quick goals coming in the final minutes of the half. Midfield play was controlled for the most part by SSF as Blair Smith, Bobby Quinlan, Leandro Monteiro, Ryan Wiegmann, & Howard Choy
did their best to distribute passes to Antony Reyes & Fabio Marques. Reyes tried to give touch passes and headers to his teammates in an effort to open up the zone, but PASC was quick to clog up the area and limit the attempts on goal. Goalkeeper Abner Ramos was again terrific in the nets as he came off his line to make numerous saves and keep SSF in the game. South City now turns its focus towards FC Palo Alto in an effort to secure 2nd place in the Premier Division. This will be another hard fought battle as FCPA are a good side. After the match, Coach Mike had this to say about his team, "I know the boys are disappointed tonite because they were unable to get the result they wanted, however I am so proud of my team for the way they handled that disappointment with class. They played their hearts out, and gave all they could give, we just couldn't get the job done on a night where the opponent was just a little bit better than we were. We have had a good season and the players have done everything asked of them. They have given 100% effort every time they have stepped on the pitch, playing beautiful soccer, and growing as a team. We look ahead to the challenges that await us, and we do it together, heads held high no matter the outcome, because that is the South City way of doing things." SSFAC meets FC Palo Alto, Sunday March 18th at Burlingame High School with kick scheduled for 6pm.
