SSFAC's PSL Cup appearances are over for 2011-12 as they lost to a very strong DV8 Defenders 7-1. DV8 is currently in 3rd place in the Majors Division just 5 points behind the leaders, and they showed why they are battling for the top spot. Although SSF fought hard and engaged in the fast paced 1st half, a goal scored just at the half gave DV8 a 3-0 lead and unfortunately let a little air out of South City's sails. The boys did come out strong in half number two, and created some scoring chances with strong midfield play from Blair Smith, Bobby Quinlan, Damian Hites, Ryan Wiegmann, Andrew Pantano & Leandro Monteiro. They kept trying to filter the ball through to Antony Reyes & Dilian Donev for attempts at net, but DV8's defense was up to the task. The SSF defense was under pressure most of the night but Scott Ellis, Ever Alvarez, Jim Burke, Harry Andreades & Thoeun Huy-Chan worked very hard at trying to control the DV8 attack. Goalkeeper Abner Ramos was again outstanding in net as he made 10 saves, most of them from point blank range. SSF didn't let up and played the entire 90 minutes hard, and they were finally rewarded for their effort when a free kick from about 22 yards out off the foot of Donev, eventually found Scott Ellis near the 6 yard box and he deflected it home for the score. The Majors Division is home to some of the strongest clubs in the PSL. Evidence of that was the same scorline of 7-1 also dealt to two other Premier Division sides in Cup play on this same day. The team now returns to regular league play when they travel to San Jose next week for a huge game with Shaheen. South City will be looking to hang on to their top spot in the Premier Division with a win.
