SSFAC traveled to Half Moon Bay on Sunday to meet a very good Deportivo Cometa team. This match would present a challenge for the squad as they only had 11 available players for the game. Cometa established their intent early on as their forward cut in from the left flank and whistled a beautiful strike on goal. SSF goal keeper Adrian Monroy made a fingertip save moving to his left and tipping the ball over the crossbar. Message was sent, but South City settled in and began to bring their own momentum into the match. In the 20th minute, they found the net as a free kick taken just outside the box beat the Cometa keeper and gave the boys a 1-0 lead. Martin Wright ran over the ball without touching it, causing the defense to shift before Cory Schmidt actually struck the ball and sent it towards goal where Connor Grant got his head to it and tipped it past the keeper.
South City pressed hard for a second goal but couldn't quite get it in. The team was getting more opportunities as Brendan Cadam and Sam Nadell controlled the flanks and Denis Ivanov provided a physical presence up front. SSFAC went into the 2nd half with that hard fought 1 goal advantage, knowing that they could win the game if they could keep Cometa from pressing forward. With no bench players available, SSF played a little deeper in their own end which was inviting pressure, but the midfield trio of Carlos Ballesteros, Corey Schmidt and Connor Grant worked in tandem to control the center of the pitch.
The backline of Martin Wright, Bob Weger, Fernando Costa and Kevin Ma played an amazing match as they absorbed the pressure from Cometa and neutralized every attack. Kevin Ma was a physical presence at right back winning countless balls in the air. Wright shut down the opposition on his side of the pitch tracking down through ball after through ball. SSFAC continued to find chances on the counterattack, with Grant making several explosive runs through the midfield, but Cometa were able to keep the ball out of their net.
The team battled hard to the final whistle and emerged with a 1-0 victory earning Monroy his 4th clean sheet of the season. Up next for the team is a home field match vs JASA Dos on Sunday, December 19th. Kickoff is set for 10:30 am at El Camino High School
