SSFAC traveled to Half Moon Bay this past Sunday to meet a very tough Deportivo Cometa side. Going in they knew the match would be a difficult one as their 2 previous encounters had both been successful 1 goal victories, but this match would be different as the team would only have 11 players available for the game, and Cometa would surely attempt to take advantage of the situation.
As the game got underway, SSF found itself in a battle to stay even as they began with just 10 players. Traffic getting into Half Moon Bay proved to be a challenge as the 11th player didn't step onto the pitch until minute 15. SSFAC was doing an amazing job of holding back Cometa as everyone was doing their part on the defensive end of things. Cometa was trying to dominate play, but South City were strong on their tackles and were still a threat on the counter attack, but in the 20th minute, Cometa struck with a great goal from outside the box to break the ice and take a 1-0 lead. SSF fought back hard and were unlucky to not equalize when their shot hit the post. They continued to make things hard on Cometa and thought they had a penalty kick coming to them, but the referee wasn't having any of it and halftime saw the score remain at 1-0
The second half started in the same fashion with Cometa pressing to get the next goal. It finally came in minute 50th, when their player was put through on a deflected ball and he slotted it home for a 2 goal lead. SSF never gave up and continued to work hard to get back in the match, but tired legs took over and a mistake allowed Cometa to close the game out with the 3rd tally at minute 80.
The team was disappointed by the loss, but extremely proud of their effort as they gave it everything they had for 90 minutes. It was unfortunate that the team could only manage 11 players this day, but Cometa earned the victory with some solid play of thier own. It was SSFAC's 1st defeat of the season after remaining unbeaten thru 9 games....something they can certainly be proud of !!
